Alabama car accidents: Fatal collision results in an arrest

Father's Day is a time of celebrating and honoring the role models in a person's life. For many, it is a day of family togetherness and fellowship. Unfortunately, car accidents can quickly turn such a day into one of mourning. One Alabama family is now likely grieving over the loss of their loved one following a collision that police say was caused by a woman who was driving under the influence.

The accident happened just before 10 a.m. Police say that a sports utility vehicle driven by a 26-year-old woman crashed into a pickup truck. A passenger in the truck, an 80-year-old man, suffered severe injuries in the collision. He was transported to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries several hours later.

Two others -- the driver of the pickup and a passenger in the SUV -- suffered injuries requiring hospital treatment. Their conditions are unclear. The driver of the SUV was uninjured, but police suspect that she was driving under the influence. In addition to that charge, she has also been charged with reckless murder and is being held on bail.

Despite the efforts to educate the public about the potential dangers of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, people continue to take such reckless actions, causing car accidents that often leave innocent families coping with the unexpected loss of a loved one and/or victims recovering from personal injuries. Often the toll of these tragedies is not just emotional and physical, but also financial as victims struggle with medical bills, loss of wages and funeral expenses. As a result, many victims in Alabama seek an award of damages in a civil court. A successfully presented case can help with the financial fallout and can also help ensure that a negligent driver is held responsible for his or her actions.
