Recovering from car accidents caused by failure to yield

A Morgan County sheriff was involved in a motor vehicle collision with a couple traveling northbound on Alabama 287. Both spouses, ages 61 and 64, suffered injuries and emotional trauma that has continued to afflict them in the aftermath of the incident. This situation, like many other car accidents, is said to have been caused by a failure to yield.

The sheriff was apparently trying to make a left-hand turn into a gas station. She reportedly did not see the couple's vehicle coming over a hill. Their car was moving at approximately 45 mph in accordance with the posted speed limit in the area.

The sheriff was traveling at approximately 15 mph when her vehicle is said to have struck the front corner of the couple's car. Both husband and wife suffered broken bones, bruises and other injuries, and were transported to the hospital for treatment. They say their vehicle was totaled in the wreck, and the wife has been unable to return to work due to her injuries.

Some may find it odd that although the sheriff underwent a chemical test for impairment, it was not conducted until at least seven hours had passed after the crash. More peculiar is the fact that the test results were not included in the insurance claim file. Such information is typically included in such records after car accidents. The sheriff has also been named as a defendant in an unrelated federal lawsuit. The recovering victims in this particular Alabama accident also filed a lawsuit against her, seeking compensation for physical, emotional and economic damages.
