Tireless Pursuit Of Your Goals

Serious car accidents sometimes lead to criminal trials

Just before 9 p.m. in Nov. 2012, a tragedy took place on an Alabama road. A driver who was reportedly acting quite recklessly behind the wheel struck down a 16-year-old boy in his path as he crossed the street. Authorities say the posted speed limit in the area was 35 miles per hour, but the man had been going at least 50 miles per hour. Car accidents involving children are especially tragic.

The man driving the car was charged with homicide, speeding, reckless driving and several other offenses. A trial jury heard arguments regarding the case on a recent Monday. Before the trial began, the man pleaded guilty to several charges, including that he lied to police after the accident, telling them his girlfriend had been the one driving.

The boy's mother is said to have wept in court as photos were displayed showing tremendous front end damage on the vehicle that had run over her son. Prosecutors made sure jury members knew the victim had been catapulted 187 feet upon impact. This was also not the first fatal crash in which the driver had been involved. He had already been convicted of vehicular manslaughter in 2006.

Car accidents in Alabama resulting in death change lives forever. Grieving families often struggle with anger when they learn the incidents that took away their loved ones could well have been prevented were it not for someone's negligence. Many take comfort in the fact that they are able to pursue justice on victims' behalves by filing wrongful death claims in civil court.
