Families of victims in fatal car accidents often speak out

A young woman in Alabama reportedly remained calm and silent in court as a jury's verdict was announced regarding her father's death. Fatal car accidents often lead to such litigation, as was the case for this woman's family, who sought justice on behalf of her deceased father. He was killed in an automobile accident that led to a former veterinarian being charged with murder and aggravated assault.

The 68-year-old victim was traveling along a west Mobile roadway in 2013. His was one of three vehicles involved in the fatal crash. The former animal doctor, age 46, was deemed responsible. Police said he was operating a motor vehicle while impaired under influence of sleep and anxiety medications.

Two occupants of the third vehicle suffered injuries in the accident as well. It was not the first time the defendant had been accused of impaired driving. He pleaded guilty to two separate DUI incidents in 2002.

In light of his recent murder conviction, the man faces up to 99 years in prison with an additional possible year for each conviction for aggravated assault. The deceased victim's daughter said she realizes others were negatively impacted by the situation, but her family's focus has always been (and will continue to be) on achieving justice regarding her father. Alabama fatal car accidents are obviously devastating to victims' families, they often incur substantial financial strain above and beyond their grief due to medical and funeral expenses. By filing wrongful death claims against responsible parties, immediate family members of victims may seek compensation for all related damages.
